Architecture Photography Meetup

Architecture Photography Meetup

Saturday 27 April
Cape Charles, VA - 10am - 2 Hours
Virginia Beach Photography Group
Dawn Rykheart
Architectural photography can be a great way of exploring and documenting a city. We will learn ways to capture not only the design and accurate representation of a building, but to have the shots be aesthetically pleasing to the viewer's eye. An architectural photographer makes pictures, not takes pictures.

On the National Registry of Historic Places, Cape Charles is a quaint shore town with one of the largest concentrations of turn-of-the-century buildings on the East Coast. The historic district features a range of architectural styles representing the period between 1880 and 1920. These styles include Queen Anne, Victorian Italianate, Gothic Revival, Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, and Bungalow.

In this session, we will be covering how to better understand Architecture photography and we'll be looking at ways to take some impressive shots and the camera settings to use.

I had a great time at the Street Photography at Night Meetup. Eric was a great help and knew some spots to get really good shots. He also has a good eye for composition and would share some suggestions. We got lucky with a rainstorm beforehand that left some puddles for reflections as well as a lightening storm in the distance. I continue to enjoy these meetups.

This picture was taken as part of my anniversary/Valentine's Day photo shoot that I did for my girlfriend and myself. We took this and several other pictures at an abandoned train car behind the buildings in Old Town Petersburg. I really love the depth of field that was created and the natural vignette caused by the shadows.

This photo was made recently at the VMFA in Richmond. I have always admired how open the foyer is. The "bridges" are so cool. Usually I wait for people to be out of my frame, before I shoot. This photo, however, lives through the people in it. Something new to me. I stood at one end of the foyer, on a "bridge", on the second floor.I was at the Museum in the early afternoon. The photo is taken with my Panasonic Lumix fz300 and has very little editing in Adobe Elements.

I took this photo after the sun had set behind the mountains in Asheville, NC. As I had my tripod set up on one of the back patios of the Omni Grove Park Inn, I was hoping to capture a shot of the layers of the mountains that I had seen many other photographers capture in a like manner. There weren't very many clouds in the sky to reflect the sunset colors but to my delight a couple of them settled in just the right spot to add that much more interest to the photo.

As a deep space photographer, I like to take photos of outer space targets that our eyes cannot see. These photos require a lot of patience and a lot of clear nights reason why my telescopes are working almost every night when it isn't cloudy. Astrophotography is very different from all the other types of photography, a single photo sometimes requires tens of hours under the clear night sky but the result is very satisfying. In this photo, I would like to present to you the California Nebula
